Japan surges ahead as top FDI investor in India for Q1 FY27

Japan topped India's foreign direct investment rankings in the first quarter of the current fiscal year, channeling $5.71 billion into the country during April-June, government data revealed. This represents a significant increase from the $3.74 billion Japan invested during the entire 2025-26 fiscal year, reflecting growing investor confidence in India's economic prospects.

Japanese investments accounted for nearly 29 per cent of India's total equity inflows of $19.81 billion during the quarter. The strong performance aligns with Japan's stated objective to invest 10 trillion yen—approximately Rs 7 lakh crore—into India over the course of a decade, a target that underscores the strategic importance both nations place on bilateral economic cooperation.

The surge in Japanese investment comes amid intensified diplomatic efforts to strengthen commercial ties between the two countries. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently visited Japan to advance bilateral trade and investment partnerships, highlighting India's appeal as a destination for Japanese capital seeking growth opportunities in Asia's emerging markets.

According to official statements, Japanese enterprises have already deployed Rs 1 lakh crore toward their broader 10 trillion yen investment commitment, indicating that momentum continues building toward the stated goal. The investment flows span multiple sectors, reflecting Japan's diversified economic engagement with India.
