Japan to levy rescue fees on Mount Fuji off-season climbers

Authorities governing the northern section of Japan's iconic Mount Fuji announced new regulations designed to enhance safety and reduce the burden on rescue services. Starting next year, climbers who require helicopter evacuation during off-season periods will be required to bear the costs of their rescue operations.
The fee structure represents one of several initiatives being implemented by Yamanashi prefecture to address the growing problem of inadequately prepared mountaineers attempting to scale the 3,776-metre peak. Officials have expressed concerns about the rising number of rescue operations during months when climbing conditions are particularly hazardous and facilities are limited.
The off-season rescue fee policy is expected to serve as a significant deterrent, encouraging climbers to undertake the ascent only during official climbing seasons when proper infrastructure, weather conditions, and support services are readily available.
