Japan trade minister blames X glitch for diplomatic confusion over Bangladesh visit

Japan's trade minister Ryosei Akazawa has attributed a diplomatic misunderstanding to a faulty automatic translation on X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk. The error occurred when X's translation feature incorrectly rendered a post about Akazawa's visit to Bangladesh, causing confusion about which prime minister he had met. According to the account, X's system mistranslated the minister's post to suggest he had met former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, when he had actually visited incumbent Prime Minister Muhammad Yunus or his administration. The incident highlights the potential pitfalls of relying on automated translation tools for diplomatic communications, where precision is paramount. Akazawa's office has since clarified the matter to address any resulting confusion in bilateral relations. The mix-up underscores growing concerns about the accuracy of AI-powered translation systems, particularly for high-stakes communications between government officials. X has not publicly responded to the complaint regarding the translation error.
