MANILA – The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has forwarded the names of five candidates for the position of chief justice to the Office of the President following comprehensive deliberations on Thursday.
The submission comes as the judiciary prepares for the mandatory retirement of the sitting chief justice. The JBC conducted an extensive review process before narrowing down the pool of applicants to the final five nominees.
The list will now be transmitted directly to Malacañang for the President's consideration. The chief justice serves as the head of the Supreme Court and the entire judicial system, making the appointment one of the most significant positions in the government.
The JBC, composed of leading figures from the bench, bar, and civil society, is tasked with evaluating and recommending judicial candidates to the President. The selection process involves rigorous assessment of the qualifications, integrity, and competence of all applicants.
The Palace is expected to make its final selection from among the five nominees, with the appointee undergoing confirmation hearings before the Commission on Appointments prior to assuming office.
