JD(U) grapples with internal discord ahead of Bihar MLC elections

Bihar's ruling Janata Dal (United) is confronting internal strife as several of its MLAs have broken ranks ahead of the state's Legislative Council elections. The rebels have indicated they will field or support their own candidates rather than backing the party's official picks, marking a significant show of dissent within the JD(U) ranks.
Anand Madhav, one of the rebel MLAs, defended the move by emphasizing that the decision reflected "respect" for party workers at the grassroots level. He asserted that despite their departure from the party line, the dissenting MLAs would maintain their broader alignment with the National Democratic Alliance framework that governs Bihar politics.
The development underscores growing fissures within the JD(U), which has long been a dominant force in Bihar politics through its partnership with the BJP. The rebellion by sitting MLAs suggests underlying tensions over candidate selection and representation, potentially complicating the party's electoral prospects in the council polls.
Such internal challenges come at a sensitive moment for the JD(U), as factional disputes could weaken its position in state politics. However, the assurance from rebel leaders regarding their continued NDA allegiance suggests the conflict remains largely within party boundaries rather than threatening the broader coalition's stability.
