JEE Advanced 2026: Three-quarters of test-takers fail physics question

India's Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced 2026 has exposed substantial knowledge gaps among test-takers, according to findings released by the Joint Implementation Committee (JIC). The most striking figure concerns Physics Paper 2, where a single question stumped 74.84 percent of candidates, resulting in incorrect responses that triggered negative marking provisions.

The performance deficit extends beyond physics. Analysis of the examination data reveals that numerous questions across mathematics and chemistry also resulted in negative marking penalties for more than 60 percent of the student cohort. This pattern suggests systematic difficulty in specific question sets rather than isolated anomalies.

JEE Advanced remains among India's most competitive entrance examinations, serving as the gateway to premier engineering institutions including the Indian Institutes of Technology. The examination's notoriously rigorous standards and extensive negative marking for incorrect answers contribute to its challenging nature.

The JIC report provides valuable insights into student preparedness levels and question difficulty calibration. Officials have traditionally used such performance metrics to refine examination design and assessment methodologies for subsequent years. The data underscores the need for targeted revision strategies among aspirants, particularly in conceptual physics and quantitative problem-solving.
