Tata Motors and Stellantis, the multinational automotive group that owns the Jeep brand, have formalized a strategic alliance to engineer and manufacture a mid-size Jeep SUV tailored for the Indian market. The collaboration will leverage the ARGOS platform, which underpins the recently launched Tata Sierra, to create a competitive offering in the rapidly expanding mid-size SUV segment.
The project, referred to as J1J during development, is anticipated to enter the market in the first half of 2028. According to available information, the new Jeep SUV is expected to offer consumers multiple powertrain choices, with both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) variants planned for launch. This dual-approach strategy aligns with industry trends as Indian consumers increasingly balance performance preferences with environmental considerations.
The partnership represents a significant move for Stellantis to strengthen its presence in India's competitive SUV market, while allowing Tata Motors to expand its manufacturing capabilities through the Jeep brand. The use of the ARGOS platform demonstrates the efficiency of leveraging existing technologies to reduce development timelines and production costs.
Industry observers note that the mid-size SUV segment has become increasingly crowded in India, with multiple manufacturers offering models in the Rs 10-18 lakh price bracket. The new Jeep offering will need to differentiate itself through features, performance, and value proposition to compete effectively against established players in the category.
