Jefferies has adopted a more cautious approach towards India's IT sector following significant foreign portfolio investor (FPI) outflows, with the brokerage moving to downgrade key sector players. Tata Consultancy Services has been assigned an underperform rating, while Infosys remains on hold, reflecting concerns about near-term headwinds in the technology services industry.
The cautious stance comes as India has witnessed approximately $10 billion in net FPI outflows, prompting brokerages to reassess their sector allocations and recommendations. This shift marks a notable change in sentiment toward the IT sector, which has traditionally been viewed as a defensive investment within India's broader equity market.
In contrast to its pessimism on IT, Jefferies has expressed preference for other sectors it perceives as more attractive at current valuations. The brokerage has highlighted energy, utilities and real estate as preferred areas, with Reliance Industries featuring prominently among its favoured energy stocks. This rebalancing suggests Jefferies sees better value and growth prospects in these segments relative to information technology.
The brokerage's repositioning underscores growing investor caution about IT sector valuations amid macroeconomic uncertainties and shifting capital flows. While IT services remain integral to India's economy and export earnings, near-term volatility in foreign investment flows appears to be driving more selective recommendations from research houses.
