Jelutong reclamation project scope questioned as plan balloons sevenfold

The ProtectKarpal committee has raised concerns about the ballooning scope of the proposed Jelutong reclamation project, questioning how the development has grown approximately seven times its original size over the past four years.

According to the residents' group, a formal agreement signed in 2020 outlined a much smaller 4-hectare scheme. However, the current plans now encompass 28 hectares, representing a significant expansion that the committee argues requires public explanation and justification.

The sharp increase in project scale raises questions about environmental impact assessments, public consultation processes, and the rationale behind the expansion. Residents have called on state authorities to provide a transparent account of how and why the project parameters were modified so substantially.

The Jelutong area, home to the historic Karpal Singh Drive, has long been a focal point for conservation concerns among local communities wary of large-scale coastal development projects. The committee's questions add to ongoing debates in Penang about balancing economic development with environmental preservation in sensitive coastal zones.

As of now, it remains unclear whether additional public hearings or environmental reviews have been conducted to address the expanded scope of the reclamation initiative.
