The 34-year-old worker at the Yishun jewellery store executed the scheme by substituting genuine gold pieces with counterfeit replicas sourced from Chinese e-commerce platform Taobao. Over a period spanning several months, he systematically pilfered valuable items from the store's inventory, replacing each with a fake alternative to avoid immediate detection.
Investigations revealed that the man had pawned the stolen jewellery to generate cash for gambling activities and to settle accumulated personal debts. The total value of the stolen items exceeded $216,000, marking a significant loss to his employer.
The District Court sentenced the employee to 27 months imprisonment following his conviction. The case highlights vulnerabilities in retail operations and the ongoing problem of internal theft in the jewellery sector, where employees with access to valuable stock pose a particular risk.
Police investigations traced the counterfeit items back to online purchases, allowing investigators to establish the timeline and method of the theft. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of robust inventory controls and staff monitoring in high-value retail environments.
