Jindal Steel Limited, working in partnership with CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI), has achieved international recognition for building the longest road constructed exclusively from processed steel slag aggregates. The project, completed at Raigarh in Chhattisgarh, represents a significant breakthrough in sustainable road construction methodology.
The record-setting highway utilised approximately 2 lakh tonnes of processed steel slag—a by-product of steel manufacturing—as a complete replacement for conventional natural aggregates. The four-lane road stretches 1.85 kilometres, demonstrating the technical feasibility and scalability of using industrial waste materials in major infrastructure projects.
The initiative directly reduces India's dependence on quarrying for road construction materials while addressing the challenge of managing steel manufacturing by-products. Steel slag, traditionally classified as waste, is now being leveraged as a valuable resource for building critical transportation infrastructure.
The achievement underscores the potential for India's industrial sector to drive sustainable development through technological innovation.
