Jio extends lead as India's telecom sector adds 5.5 million users

Reliance Jio strengthened its position as India's largest mobile operator by adding 2.4 million subscribers in August, while Bharti Airtel onboarded 2.1 million users during the same month, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) data showed.

The combined additions by the two telecom giants underscored the continued expansion of India's wireless market, even as competition remained intense across price-sensitive segments. Both operators have been leveraging affordable data plans and 5G rollout strategies to capture new users.

India's total wireless subscriber base—encompassing both traditional mobile and Fixed Wireless Access services—reached 1,312.25 million at the end of August 2026, reflecting a monthly growth rate of 0.46 per cent. The steady expansion indicates sustained demand for connectivity services across the country's diverse user base.

The telecom sector has remained a key driver of digital adoption in India, with operators competing on tariff, network quality and service offerings to retain and acquire customers in an increasingly saturated market.
