Jio, Starlink poised to launch satellite internet services in India
Three companies have secured licenses to offer satellite-based internet connectivity directly to Indian homes. Reliance Jio, SpaceX's Starlink, and OneWeb are preparing commercial launches as the sector opens to private operators.

India is preparing to enter a new phase of broadband expansion with satellite-based internet services set to launch in coming months. The Department of Telecommunications has granted licenses to three operators—Reliance Jio, SpaceX's Starlink, and OneWeb—to provide satellite communication (SATCOM) services across the country.
Satellite-based internet represents a significant shift in connectivity infrastructure, particularly for remote and rural areas where traditional terrestrial networks face deployment challenges. Unlike conventional broadband, which relies on ground-based towers and fiber networks, satellite internet transmits data directly from orbital satellites to user terminals installed at homes and businesses. This technology can theoretically reach any location with a clear view of the sky.
The three licensed operators are now preparing commercial service rollouts, though specific launch dates and pricing structures remain under development. Industry observers expect satellite internet to complement rather than replace existing broadband infrastructure, targeting underserved regions and specific use cases where traditional networks are economically or technically unviable.
Cost considerations will be critical to adoption rates. Satellite internet typically involves higher latency than fiber-based connections and may carry premium pricing, particularly during initial commercial phases. Service packages and pricing will likely vary among operators based on their business models and target demographics.
