JKR to extend street lighting hours as haze reduces visibility

The Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) has announced plans to adjust street light timer systems nationwide to address safety concerns posed by seasonal haze. The additional two hours of illumination will help compensate for reduced visibility caused by air pollution, which typically peaks during haze episodes.

Reduced visibility during haze conditions significantly increases the risk of traffic accidents, particularly during dawn and dusk hours when light levels are already compromised. By extending street lighting duration, authorities aim to provide clearer road conditions for motorists and pedestrians, thereby reducing collision incidents.

The timing adjustment represents a preventive approach to public safety during periods when air quality indices reach unhealthy levels. JKR's decision reflects broader efforts by Malaysian authorities to mitigate haze-related hazards affecting daily commuting and transportation across the country.

The extended lighting programme will remain in effect during haze episodes, with JKR monitoring air quality data to determine activation periods. Residents and road users are advised to exercise additional caution during reduced visibility conditions, regardless of street lighting improvements.
