Jawaharlal Nehru University's governing body has approved the conferment of Professor Emeritus status on Amitabh Mattoo, recognising his contributions to the institution. The decision was reached after deliberations at a recent meeting of the university leadership.
The prestigious title, typically awarded to distinguished scholars who have made significant contributions to their field, will become effective following Mattoo's voluntary retirement on February 28, 2027. This timing allows the university to formally acknowledge his academic legacy as he transitions from active service.
The Professor Emeritus designation is considered an honour in Indian academia, enabling senior scholars to maintain their association with their institution while pursuing research and intellectual activities beyond their regular tenure. JNU, one of India's premier central universities, has a tradition of recognising eminent faculty members through such distinctions.
Mattoo's career at JNU and his scholarly work in his field have reportedly warranted the university's decision to extend this recognition as he concludes his formal tenure at the institution.
