Job market tightens for fresh graduates and retrenched workers

Singapore's employment landscape is becoming increasingly challenging for job seekers, according to labour market observations by Jasmin Lau. Fresh graduates are facing extended job searches, while workers displaced through retrenchment are struggling to land new positions, signalling cooling demand across sectors.

The labour market weakness is most visible among specific worker segments. Clerical, sales and service workers have experienced the sharpest decline in re-entry rates, alongside tertiary-educated residents and those under 30. This suggests that even degree holders are finding it harder to transition quickly into new roles, reversing assumptions that higher qualifications guarantee faster employment.

The trend reflects broader economic headwinds affecting the region's largest financial hub. Singapore's job market, traditionally characterised by relatively quick workforce transitions, is seeing extended hiring freezes and reduced hiring activity across multiple sectors. Younger workers appear particularly vulnerable, facing stiffer competition and potentially longer waits before securing permanent positions.

The employment slowdown underscores the importance of upskilling and adaptability as workers navigate a more competitive landscape. Both fresh entrants to the workforce and mid-career professionals may need to broaden their skill sets or consider roles outside their traditional sectors to improve employment prospects in the current environment.
