Job promises, free travel lure Bangladeshis into human trafficking schemes

Human traffickers operating across Bangladesh are using a proven formula to ensnare victims: the promise of well-paid jobs abroad combined with offers of free or heavily discounted travel to destinations like Malaysia. The scheme preys on jobseekers desperate for income, particularly in rural areas where legitimate employment opportunities remain scarce.

Once victims arrive in destination countries, the situation rapidly deteriorates. Recruiters confiscate travel documents, impose excessive debt repayment schemes for travel costs, and force workers into conditions amounting to servitude. Many find themselves isolated, unable to communicate, and entirely dependent on their traffickers for survival.

Malaysia has become a primary destination for trafficked Bangladeshi workers, who are forced into construction, domestic service, and factory work under exploitative conditions. The International Labour Organization estimates thousands of Bangladeshi nationals are currently in situations of forced labour across Southeast Asia.

Bangladeshi authorities and international organisations have intensified awareness campaigns targeting potential migrants. Officials advise jobseekers to verify employment offers through official channels, never surrender travel documents, and report suspicious recruitment practices to law enforcement immediately. Community leaders and NGOs are working to educate vulnerable populations about trafficking indicators and protective measures.
