Johor Bahru entrepreneur opens trust-based thrift store with Japanese model
A Johor Bahru businessman has launched an unconventional retail concept allowing customers to browse and pay independently in a compact 3-by-3-metre thrift shop inspired by unmanned retail stores popular in Japan.

Brand Bundle, a minimalist thrift store in Johor Bahru, operates on a simple premise: customers select items at their leisure and settle payments without staff supervision. The concept, pioneered by owner Mohd Idham Zamzuri, draws inspiration from Japan's growing network of unattended retail outlets that rely on consumer honesty.
The store's compact footprint of just nine square metres presents a unique challenge for traditional retail operations. Rather than viewing space constraints as a limitation, Zamzuri designed the layout to encourage efficient browsing while maintaining an open, trustworthy shopping environment. The model eliminates overhead costs associated with staffing while creating an intimate retail experience.
The trust-based approach reflects a broader global shift toward autonomous and self-service retail formats, particularly in developed markets where unmanned stores have gained traction. Such concepts test consumer behaviour and community values, assuming that most shoppers will conduct transactions honestly when given the autonomy to do so.
Brand Bundle's operation highlights changing consumer preferences in Malaysia's retail landscape, where younger shoppers increasingly value convenience, transparency, and unique shopping experiences. The success of such unconventional models may influence how retailers in the region approach store design and customer interaction in coming years.
