A Johor Bahru resident has reported losing RM486,000 after being duped by a fraudster who impersonated her employer through text messages. The scam came to light after the victim discovered the unauthorized transactions and lodged a police report.
According to the incident report, the perpetrator contacted the victim via messaging, claiming to be her supervisor and requesting urgent financial assistance under the guise of business matters. The convincing nature of the communications, combined with the use of familiar workplace references, led the victim to comply with the requests without verifying the legitimacy of the claims.
The victim proceeded to transfer multiple sums totalling RM486,000 before discovering the fraudulent nature of the scheme. The scammer had successfully exploited the trust typically associated with employer-employee relationships to gain access to the victim's funds.
The incident highlights the growing sophistication of impersonation scams in Malaysia, where criminals leverage digital communication channels to establish false credibility. Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution when receiving unexpected requests for money transfers, even from apparently trusted sources, and to independently verify such requests through official contact channels before taking action.
