Johor Opposition Demands Indonesia Issue Formal Apology for Haze Crisis

Pakatan Harapan leaders in Johor have called on the Indonesian government to stop deflecting blame and formally apologise for transboundary haze pollution affecting Malaysia. The coalition says Jakarta must take concrete action rather than making excuses for the recurring environmental crisis.

The Johor chapter of Pakatan Harapan (PH) has intensified pressure on Indonesia's federal government to address the recurring transboundary haze problem with genuine accountability and formal apologies rather than defensive statements.

Party representatives contended that Indonesia's pattern of dismissing responsibility has become untenable, particularly given the severe health and environmental impacts experienced by Malaysian communities, especially in border states like Johor.

The coalition emphasised that simply attributing the haze to natural phenomena or seasonal weather patterns falls short of addressing the root causes, which include uncontrolled land-clearing and forest fires in Indonesian territory. PH officials stressed that meaningful action requires Indonesia to acknowledge its role in the crisis and commit to preventative measures.

The call comes amid renewed concerns over haze levels affecting air quality across Malaysia's peninsula. Authorities have previously expressed frustration with the lack of coordinated bilateral efforts to curb the problem, which resurfaces annually during the dry season.

Malaysia's government has previously engaged Indonesia through diplomatic channels on the issue, though environmental advocates argue more public accountability is needed to drive systemic change in forest management practices across the border.
