Johor ramps up drought defences as super El Niño looms

Johor authorities are accelerating preparations to shield the state's water supply from prolonged drought conditions expected under a super El Niño phenomenon. The measures underscore growing concerns about water availability in the region as climate patterns shift toward drier conditions.

Among the initiatives being activated are additional pontoons and transfer pump systems designed to maximise water extraction and distribution from existing sources. These mechanical interventions will allow water authorities to respond more flexibly to supply pressures and maintain adequate reserves across Johor's distribution network.

Cloud seeding operations have also been ramped up as part of the preparatory strategy. The technique, which involves dispersing substances into clouds to encourage rainfall, represents an additional tool to supplement natural precipitation during the anticipated dry period.

The state government's proactive stance reflects lessons learned from previous drought episodes in the region, where water shortages have posed challenges to both domestic consumption and industrial operations. Officials emphasise that layered defensive strategies combining infrastructure improvements, technology deployment, and weather modification efforts offer the most comprehensive approach to safeguarding essential supplies during extended dry spells.
