Johor schools shut for two days as air quality reaches unhealthy levels

The Regent of Johor has ordered all schools in the state to close for two consecutive days due to deteriorating air quality. The closure comes as the Air Pollutant Index reaches levels deemed hazardous to public health.

JOHOR BAHRU — All schools across Johor will remain closed for two days beginning tomorrow following a directive from Tunku Mahkota Ismail, the Regent of Johor, citing unhealthy air quality conditions throughout the state.

The closure order was issued in response to the Air Pollutant Index breaching levels that pose health risks to the general population, particularly children. State authorities determined that ongoing haze conditions warranted protective measures to safeguard the wellbeing of students and staff.

The decision affects all primary and secondary institutions across Johor. Educational authorities are expected to provide further guidance on any impact to the academic calendar and examination schedules.

The haze episode reflects seasonal patterns common to the region during certain months, when transboundary pollution and local atmospheric conditions combine to degrade air quality across Malaysia and neighbouring countries. Residents have been advised to limit outdoor activities and use appropriate respiratory protection when necessary.

State environmental agencies continue to monitor air quality readings and will advise on any further measures if conditions fail to improve.
