The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will cordoff portions of Joo Chiat Road on October 3 to mark World Car-Free Day, opening the popular street to pedestrians and cyclists in a bid to promote sustainable transport alternatives. The closure will facilitate activities and community engagement focused on reducing vehicle dependency and encouraging active mobility in the neighbourhood. The October 3 event represents a key highlight in the LTA's broader campaign running from September through November, during which the authority will organise multiple initiatives aimed at raising awareness about car-free living and alternative transport modes. World Car-Free Day, observed globally on September 22, has been adapted for Singapore's local context with the extended campaign allowing residents across different areas to participate in car-free activities and discover the benefits of reduced vehicular traffic. The LTA encourages residents to use public transport, cycling, or walking during the campaign period to experience the potential improvements to air quality, safety, and community interaction that car-free zones can deliver.
