Journalists trained in disaster reporting and ethical media practices

A capacity-building initiative targeting journalists concluded at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute on October 15, following a two-day workshop that focused on disaster preparedness, resilience-building and ethical media reporting standards.

The programme, which ran from October 14-15, represents the fifth instalment in an ongoing series designed to enhance journalists' professional competencies in covering disaster-related events. Participants engaged with training materials and practical guidance on responsible reporting during emergencies and crisis situations.

The workshop addressed the critical intersection between media responsibility and public safety, emphasising the role journalists play in disseminating accurate information during disasters. The curriculum highlighted best practices for ethical reporting while maintaining news integrity and supporting community preparedness efforts.

By equipping media professionals with specialised knowledge in disaster coverage and resilience communication, the initiative aims to improve the overall quality and impact of journalism across the region. The programme underscores growing recognition of media's responsibility in complementing national disaster risk reduction and response mechanisms.
