JPMorgan favours banks, industrials over IT as oil prices ease

JPMorgan's brokerage arm is shifting its focus towards banking, industrial and consumer stocks rather than information technology shares, citing benefits from moderating crude oil prices. The strategic pivot is expected to support corporate earnings, contain inflation, and strengthen the Indian rupee.

JPMorgan is repositioning its investment stance on Indian equities, moving away from the traditional IT sector focus towards financials, industrials and consumer-oriented companies. The brokerage's outlook reflects confidence that easing global oil prices will create a more favourable macroeconomic environment for the domestic economy.

Lower crude oil prices are anticipated to ease inflationary pressures that have weighed on corporate margins and consumer purchasing power. The reduction in import costs could also provide support to the Indian rupee, which has faced headwinds from elevated oil prices and capital outflows in recent periods.

The shift in strategy suggests JPMorgan expects banking and financial services firms to benefit from improved credit demand and potentially higher net interest margins in a lower-inflation environment. Industrial companies, similarly, could see margin expansion as input costs moderate, while consumer stocks may experience demand recovery as household purchasing power improves.

This repositioning marks a departure from the extended period when Indian IT services companies dominated foreign investor portfolios, reflecting changing market dynamics and the brokerage's assessment of which sectors offer better value and growth prospects in the current cycle.
