JSW, Skoda-Volkswagen to form India JV for mass-market vehicles

JSW Steel and the Skoda-Volkswagen group have entered into an agreement to explore a joint venture in India, marking a significant step in the automotive sector. Under the proposed partnership, JSW would hold a 51 percent stake while Skoda-Volkswagen would retain 49 percent ownership of the entity.

The venture is designed to address India's diverse automotive market across multiple powertrains. The joint company plans to develop and manufacture mass-market vehicles spanning internal combustion engine models, hybrid variants and fully electric vehicles, positioning itself to cater to evolving consumer preferences and regulatory requirements in India.

Both parties have committed to finalising a binding agreement by December, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary conditions. The timeline indicates a swift progression from the preliminary understanding to formal contractual arrangements.

The partnership combines JSW's industrial expertise and manufacturing capabilities with Volkswagen Group's automotive technology and global experience. This collaboration reflects the automotive industry's broader shift toward electrification and diversified mobility solutions in India's growing vehicle market.
