K.R. Market Parking Redesign Eases Traffic but Squeezes Vendor Revenue

The Greater Bengaluru Authority's redesigned parking scheme at K.R. Market represents a significant shift in the wholesale market's traffic management. Officials have installed barricades and created a dedicated vehicular route into the facility, with Avenue Road's width halved to accommodate the new system. The arrangement aims to create smoother movement through one of the city's busiest commercial zones.

Traffic flow improvements have been evident since implementation, with congestion levels notably reduced during peak hours. The controlled entry system and dedicated pathways have eliminated much of the chaos that previously characterised vehicle movements in the area. For commuters and bulk buyers, the streamlined approach has translated into faster access and reduced waiting times.

However, the restructuring has created significant challenges for small vendors operating around the market perimeter. Reduced accessibility to the market's surroundings has dampened customer footfall in neighbouring shops and establishments. Many small business owners report marked declines in daily transactions since the barricades were installed, as the altered traffic patterns have diverted potential customers away from their doorsteps.

The authority has not yet announced measures to mitigate the impact on peripheral vendors, who form an integral part of the K.R. Market ecosystem. Ongoing discussions between market stakeholders and municipal officials are expected to explore potential adjustments that balance traffic efficiency with commercial viability for affected traders.
