Kadapa police bust major red sanders smuggling racket, arrest nine

Authorities in Kadapa have dismantled a major smuggling operation targeting red sanders, a highly valued but protected timber species native to the region. The arrests mark a significant crackdown on illegal trafficking of the wood, which commands high prices in domestic and international markets due to its scarcity and restricted harvesting.

The operation resulted in the seizure of 87 logs weighing approximately 1.81 metric tonnes, along with five four-wheel drive vehicles that investigators believe were used to transport the smuggled material from forested areas to distribution networks. Police said the vehicles were equipped for off-road transport through challenging terrain, enabling the smuggling operations to circumvent official checkpoints.

Red sanders logging has emerged as a persistent environmental challenge in Andhra Pradesh, with the trees facing extinction threat due to rampant illegal felling. The wood is in high demand for furniture, musical instruments, and decorative items, driving a lucrative black market despite legal protections.

The arrested individuals are expected to face charges under wildlife protection laws. Authorities have intensified patrols and checkpoints across the district as part of broader efforts to curb illegal timber smuggling and protect the region's forest resources.
