Water levels in the Kalu Ganga have risen sharply due to persistent rainfall across its upper catchment areas, prompting authorities to issue precautionary warnings on Thursday.
According to the Irrigation Department, measurements at the Millakanda gauging station exceeded 5 metres by this morning, indicating a substantial increase from normal operating levels. The surge reflects the volume of water flowing downstream from rain-affected zones upstream.
Officials have advised communities residing in low-lying areas adjacent to the river to exercise heightened caution and remain prepared for potential flooding. Residents are urged to monitor official updates and heed any directives issued by relevant authorities regarding evacuation or safety measures.
The Irrigation Department continues to monitor water levels at key gauging stations along the river system. Further updates are expected as weather conditions develop and water levels stabilise.
