The Delhi High Court has taken cognisance of a plea filed by Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut seeking legal recourse against the unauthorised creation and distribution of synthetic intimate imagery using her name and likeness. Justice Vikas Mahajan issued summons following the petition, which challenges the circulation of AI-generated obscene material on digital platforms without her consent.
The court's intervention comes as deepfake technology increasingly enables the creation of non-consensual intimate content, raising significant concerns about the violation of personality and publicity rights. Ranaut's petition seeks protective measures and directives to online platforms to remove such material and prevent its further circulation.
A similar petition was simultaneously addressed by the court in the case of Telugu actor Vijay Deverakonda, who faces identical grievances regarding AI-generated obscene content. The issuance of summons indicates the court's willingness to examine the legal frameworks governing digital content and the protection of individuals from synthetic abuse.
The case highlights growing jurisprudential challenges in India regarding deepfake technology and the adequacy of existing laws to address non-consensual synthetic intimate imagery. Legal experts have noted that such petitions underscore the need for comprehensive legislative measures to protect citizens from AI-enabled harassment and privacy violations.
