Kanlaon volcanic ashfall triggers class suspension in Negros

Kanlaon Volcano generated an ash emission on Monday morning that rose approximately 200 meters above the summit crater, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The ash plume drifted eastward from the volcano, which straddles the borders of Negros Oriental and Canlaon City in Negros Occidental.

The ashfall affected populated areas in Canlaon City and surrounding communities, prompting local officials to take precautionary measures. The volcanic emission was the latest sign of activity from Kanlaon, one of the Philippines' active volcanoes.

In response to the ashfall, school officials suspended in-person classes at all educational levels in the affected zone. The suspension was implemented to protect students and teachers from potential respiratory hazards and reduced visibility caused by the volcanic ash.

Phivolcs continues to monitor Kanlaon's activity closely. Residents in nearby communities are advised to take precautions against ashfall, including the use of protective masks and avoiding outdoor activities during periods of heavy ashfall.
