BACOLOD CITY — Kanlaon Volcano exhibited a significant surge in seismic activity this week, with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recording 105 volcanic-tectonic earthquakes beneath the volcano between Thursday noon and Friday morning.

The strongest earthquake registered magnitude 3 and struck at 2:10 a.m. Friday, according to Mari-Andylene Quintia, Phivolcs resident volcanologist. The concentrated seismic swarm prompted the agency to alert authorities and residents of a heightened eruption risk at the volcano, which straddles Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental provinces.

Volcanic-tectonic earthquakes occur as magma and gases move through rock beneath a volcano, making them a key indicator of potential volcanic activity. The frequency and intensity of these tremors over the past day have raised concerns among volcanologists monitoring the situation.

Phivolcs continues to closely observe Kanlaon's activity and has advised local government units and communities in nearby areas to maintain heightened alert status. Residents are urged to stay informed about any updates from the agency regarding volcanic hazards and evacuation procedures.
