Kannadiga activists renew push for job quotas in Bengaluru's IT sector
Regional groups are intensifying demands for local hiring preferences in technology companies, reviving a longstanding debate over employment opportunities for Karnataka residents in the state's booming IT industry.

Activist organizations in Karnataka have launched a fresh campaign targeting Bengaluru's technology firms, demanding greater employment opportunities for local residents. The Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) initiated the drive this week, with members visiting major IT companies to press their case for preferential hiring policies favoring Kannadigas.
The renewed push reflects ongoing tensions between regional groups and the technology sector over workforce composition and local representation. Bengaluru's IT industry, which has transformed the city into India's premier technology hub, has historically drawn talent from across the country and internationally, raising concerns among local activists about limited job prospects for Karnataka natives.
The quota demand is not new—regional movements have periodically raised similar grievances over the past several decades. However, the coordinated campaign by KRV suggests renewed momentum behind the issue as Bengaluru continues its rapid expansion as a global technology center.
The technology industry representatives have not yet responded publicly to the latest campaign. The push raises broader questions about balancing regional employment aspirations with the competitive, merit-based hiring practices that have defined India's IT sector's meteoric growth.
