Kanya Pujan for Ashtami and Navami to be Observed Together This Year

The Ashtami tithi, or lunar phase, will commence on October 18 at 8:28 AM and conclude on October 19 at 10:51 AM, according to the Hindu calendar system. Since the Ashtami phase will not align with sunrise on October 18, the Kanya Pujan—the ritual worship of young girls representing the nine forms of the goddess—will be performed on October 19 instead.

The convergence of both Ashtami and Navami on the same day is relatively uncommon, creating a unique astronomical and ritualistic occurrence. October 19 will witness the observance of both Kanya Pujan rituals as well as Sandhi Puja, a special worship conducted at the transition between lunar phases.

This adjustment follows the traditional Hindu calendar's calculations, which determine auspicious timings based on the precise moments of tithi inception and conclusion. Devotees observe these rituals during the Durga Puja or Navratri festival period, commemorating the victory of the goddess over evil forces.

Temples and households across India have already begun preparations for the ceremonies, with many scheduling their observances according to the October 19 timing. Religious scholars have advised followers to consult local pandits for precise auspicious moments in their respective regions, as timings may vary based on geographical location.
