Karan Johar's Student Franchise Pivots to Dark Web Series with Shanaya Kapoor

Karan Johar has taken his Student of the Year franchise in an unexpected direction, transforming the property into a dark, suspenseful web series that departs sharply from the light-hearted college drama audiences have come to expect.

The new digital adaptation will centre on a murder mystery narrative, with actor Shanaya Kapoor taking on a complex dual role. This casting choice adds intrigue to the project, as the dual-character format suggests plot twists and layered storytelling beyond the franchise's traditional scope.

The pivot from Johar's established student-centric universe reflects changing audience preferences in Indian digital content, where streaming platforms have increasingly favoured thriller and mystery genres over conventional romantic dramas. By leveraging the Student of the Year brand recognition while adopting a genre typically associated with international hits like Squid Game, the series aims to attract both franchise loyalists and viewers seeking edgier content.

Details regarding the web series' release date, supporting cast, and streaming platform have not been announced. The project represents one of several franchise reimaginings from established Bollywood producers seeking to expand their reach in the competitive digital entertainment space.
