The Karnataka cabinet on Thursday turned down clemency pleas filed by Shubha Shankaranarayana and D Arun Verma, who are serving life imprisonment for the murder of software engineer B V Girish in December 2003.
Girish, who was engaged to Shankaranarayana at the time, was killed in Bengaluru in what became one of the city's high-profile crime cases. The two convicts have exhausted their options within the state's legal framework with the cabinet's rejection of their clemency petitions.
The decision marks the final step in the state-level mercy petition process. Both convicts will continue serving their life sentences unless they pursue further legal remedies through higher courts or seek intervention from other authorities.
The 2003 murder case had drawn significant attention at the time, highlighting crimes within Bengaluru's IT professional circles. The case was resolved through the legal process, with both accused convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.
