Karnataka cabinet green-lights ₹1,118 crore additional funding for highway project

The Karnataka cabinet has cleared an extra ₹1,118 crore in funds for a 134-kilometre road connectivity project, as the total project cost has escalated significantly since its initial approval six years ago.

Originally sanctioned at ₹2,290 crore in 2017, the revised project cost now stands at ₹3,409 crore, representing a 49 per cent increase over the initial estimate. State officials attributed the cost overrun to multiple factors encountered during implementation, including higher-than-anticipated land acquisition expenses, inflationary pressures on material prices, project delays, and additional works required to meet current specifications.

The additional allocation approved by the cabinet aims to ensure the timely completion of the infrastructure project, which is expected to enhance regional connectivity. The revised cost structure reflects the realities of execution that emerged after project commencement, including market fluctuations and scope modifications identified during the construction phase.

The project's extended timeline and increased expenditure underscore common implementation challenges faced by large infrastructure initiatives across India, where cost escalations due to land acquisition and material price volatility have become increasingly frequent.
