Karnataka clarifies night-shift protections for women workers remain in force

The Karnataka Labour Department has moved to clarify that protective provisions for women workers on night shifts have been retained following the transition to new occupational safety regulations. The assurance comes after representations from the Karnataka Independent Trade Union (KITU), which sought confirmation that worker protections would not be diminished during regulatory changes.

According to the department, safety conditions and working hour restrictions for women employees that were previously stipulated under the Shops and Commercial Establishments Act have been incorporated into the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions (OSH) Rules. This ensures continuity of protections without any gaps in implementation.

The clarification addresses concerns among workers and unions about potential lapses in safeguards during the transition between regulatory frameworks. By confirming that provisions have been carried forward rather than discontinued, the Labour Department aims to reassure stakeholders that worker safety remains a priority.

The OSH Rules represent the state's updated approach to workplace safety and health standards.
