Karnataka Congress chief seeks ₹3,705 crore drought relief from Centre

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for immediate central government support to address the devastating drought crisis in Karnataka. In his communication, Kharge sought ₹3,705 crore in emergency aid to help the state cope with widespread agricultural losses.

The appeal comes as Karnataka faces unprecedented agricultural distress, with government assessments documenting significant crop failures across the state. According to state estimates, approximately 19.52 lakh hectares of cultivated land have been affected by drought conditions, resulting in estimated crop losses exceeding ₹18,748 crore.

The drought has placed considerable pressure on Karnataka's finances and agricultural sector, affecting thousands of farmers who depend on crop production for their livelihood. Kharge's letter underscores the urgency of central intervention to prevent further economic hardship in rural areas.

The request highlights the ongoing tension between opposition-led states and the Centre regarding disaster relief allocation and drought management strategies. Karnataka has previously sought additional support to address climate-related agricultural emergencies, with leaders from multiple parties advocating for enhanced central assistance during natural calamities.
