Karnataka Court Orders Inquiry Into Asian Games Surfing Selection Process

The Karnataka High Court has ordered a formal enquiry into alleged procedural lapses in the selection of Indian surfers for the 2026 Asian Games, to be conducted by a former Supreme Court judge. The court's decision comes after acknowledging that selection norms were violated during the process, yet stopping short of mandating a complete re-selection at this advanced stage of preparation.

The bench found merit in complaints regarding the selection methodology but determined that initiating a fresh selection process would risk jeopardising India's readiness for the surfing events at the upcoming continental Games. The court weighed the procedural violations against the practical concerns of maintaining competitive preparation schedules and national participation commitments.

By directing an independent inquiry through a retired apex court judge, the court has sought to balance accountability with pragmatic considerations.
