Election authorities in Karnataka's Vijayapura district are investigating allegations that fake death certificates were used to fraudulently delete voters from registration lists ahead of upcoming elections. The District Election Officer initiated the probe after discovering irregularities in voter deletion applications submitted by associates of Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, a BJP legislator who was recently expelled from the party.
The objections were filed using Form 7, the prescribed legal procedure for removing deceased citizens' names from electoral rolls. Investigators are examining whether the death certificates accompanying these applications were genuine or fabricated to systematically delete legitimate voters from the constituency rolls.
This development comes as political temperatures rise in the region, with the expelled legislator's supporters accused of attempting to manipulate voter rolls through fraudulent documentation. The election commission has yet to disclose the number of voter deletion applications under scrutiny or any preliminary findings from the investigation.
Authorities have not announced any arrests or charges related to the matter. The inquiry will determine whether criminal proceedings should be initiated against those responsible for submitting false documents to the election authority.
