Karnataka faces severe monsoon deficit, second lowest in seven decades

Karnataka has experienced a significant shortfall in southwest monsoon rainfall, recording one of the poorest precipitation levels in recent decades. This year's rainfall total ranks as the second lowest since 1956, with only 2002 registering lower monsoon precipitation in the past seven decades. The current deficit is marginal, with 2002 having received merely 10 mm less rain than this year, illustrating the severity of the current drought conditions.

When examined over a longer historical timeframe, the situation reflects an even more concerning pattern. Among the past 125 years of meteorological records, this monsoon season ranks as the seventh lowest, suggesting that while extreme deficits are rare, they are recurring phenomena that pose persistent challenges to water resource management and agriculture in the state.

The monsoon shortfall carries significant implications for Karnataka's agricultural sector, which depends heavily on seasonal rainfall for irrigation and crop cultivation. With groundwater reserves already stressed in many regions, the poor monsoon performance threatens to compound water scarcity issues and potentially impact the state's food security and rural economy during the coming months.
