Karnataka finalises voter rolls with 4.46 crore names; over 1 crore deleted

Karnataka's electoral authorities have finalised the draft electoral rolls with 4.46 crore registered voters, following a comprehensive review that resulted in the deletion of 1.07 crore names from the previous records. The exercise identified significant numbers of voters who had shifted residence, were listed as deceased, held duplicate registrations or were absent from their registered addresses.

The deletion of such a substantial portion of names underscores the need for periodic cleansing of voter databases to maintain electoral integrity. Officials have attributed the high number of deletions to factors including migration patterns, mortality records and administrative errors accumulated over previous electoral cycles.

To address remaining irregularities, election officials have announced plans to conduct special campaigns in constituencies and wards reporting disproportionately high numbers of problematic entries. These targeted efforts aim to identify and correct discrepancies before the rolls are formally notified.

The finalised voter rolls represent a critical step in the state's electoral preparedness. Election administrators have indicated that further verification rounds will be conducted to ensure the accuracy of the remaining 4.46 crore entries and to provide eligible citizens opportunities to register or correct their details.
