Karnataka flags dangerously high ethanol levels in petrol samples
Karnataka has escalated concerns over ethanol concentration in petrol reaching up to 31.2%, significantly exceeding permissible limits, and demanded clarification from the Union government on the matter.

The Karnataka government has raised an alert regarding unusually elevated ethanol concentrations detected in petrol samples sourced from retail outlets across the state. Laboratory analysis revealed ethanol levels reaching 31.2%, substantially surpassing the prescribed standard of 10% ethanol blending mandated for fuel sold in India.
State authorities have formally approached the Union government seeking an explanation for the anomalies detected in fuel quality. The high ethanol concentrations pose concerns over fuel efficiency, engine performance, and compliance with established automotive and environmental standards.
Ethanol blending in petrol, commonly referred to as E10 fuel, is promoted as an environmentally conscious measure to reduce petroleum dependence and lower vehicular emissions. However, the concentration levels must adhere strictly to regulatory guidelines to prevent engine damage and maintain optimal vehicle functionality.
The state government's intervention underscores growing scrutiny over fuel quality control mechanisms at the distribution level. Authorities are investigating whether the elevated ethanol content resulted from blending errors at refineries, storage facilities, or retail pumps, or from potential adulteration in the supply chain.
This development adds to mounting concerns in India regarding fuel quality standards and the effectiveness of monitoring systems designed to ensure compliance with petroleum product specifications across the country.
