Karnataka gears up for record 21,000 MW power demand surge

Karnataka's energy infrastructure faces mounting pressure as the state braces for a projected peak demand of 21,000 megawatts during the upcoming summer season, marking a significant increase from historical consumption patterns. The southern state, home to India's thriving information technology sector and growing industrial base, has witnessed steep escalation in power requirements over recent years.

According to data from the state's Energy Department, Karnataka's electricity demand peaked at 18,650 MW during summer 2025, demonstrating the upward trajectory of consumption. By September 2026, demand had already climbed to 20,000 MW, underscoring the rapid pace at which power requirements are expanding across the state.

The projected 21,000 MW threshold represents a critical benchmark for Karnataka's power generation and distribution infrastructure. State authorities are tasked with ensuring adequate supply through a combination of thermal, renewable, and hydroelectric power sources to meet the anticipated demand without service disruptions.

The surge in electricity consumption reflects Karnataka's economic expansion, driven by urban growth, industrial development, and increased air-conditioning usage during hot months. Power planners are focusing on capacity additions and grid strengthening to accommodate the rising demand across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.
