Karnataka launches cancer patient tracking system after counterfeit drug seizure

Karnataka's health authorities have initiated a tracking system for cancer patients in the wake of a significant seizure of counterfeit drugs, marking a new phase in the state's fight against pharmaceutical fraud.

Health Minister U.T. Khader announced that the department has contacted pharmaceutical companies, including Pfizer, requesting the release of reference standards that would enable laboratories, medical practitioners, and manufacturers to distinguish genuine medications from counterfeit versions.

"The reference standards are critical for verification purposes," Khader said, emphasizing the need for rapid authentication mechanisms across the healthcare supply chain. The state health department views these standards as essential tools to prevent substandard medicines from reaching vulnerable populations, particularly cancer patients who depend on expensive and specialized treatments.

The tracking initiative represents a coordinated response to protect patients who may have already received compromised medications. By maintaining a registry of affected individuals, authorities can ensure they receive appropriate medical follow-up and access to verified treatments going forward.
