Karnataka launches raisin processing unit to ease farmer logistics burden

Farmers in Karnataka's Vijayapura district, a major raisin-producing region, have long faced the burden of transporting their harvest across state lines to processing centres in Maharashtra's Sangli and Pune districts. The newly established government raisin processing unit in Vijayapura aims to address this logistical challenge by bringing processing capabilities closer to the source of production.

Previously, growers had limited options: either undertake expensive long-distance transportation to Maharashtra's established processing hubs or process their raisins locally through private units that charged premium rates. This two-pronged squeeze significantly eroded farmer profits and created inefficiencies in the supply chain.

The government facility is expected to streamline operations by reducing the distance between production and processing, thereby cutting down substantially on transportation expenditure. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to strengthen agricultural infrastructure in Karnataka's drought-prone districts and support farmers in high-value crop production.

Local farmers have expressed optimism about the development, viewing it as a potential game-changer for raisin cultivation in the region.
