Karnataka MLA highlights delays in crop insurance fund disbursement to farmers

B.R. Patil, the Member of Legislative Assembly from Aland, has flagged significant lapses in the disbursement of crop insurance benefits in Karnataka, drawing attention to a substantial gap between sanctioned and distributed funds under a major federal initiative.
According to Patil, approximately ₹300 crore in claims have been sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), the government's flagship crop insurance scheme designed to provide financial protection to farmers against crop losses. However, the legislator emphasized that the complete amount has yet to reach the intended beneficiaries, raising questions about implementation bottlenecks in the state.
The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, launched nationally in 2016, aims to provide comprehensive insurance coverage for crops at subsidized premium rates. The scheme covers crop losses due to natural calamities, pests, and diseases, and is administered at the state level in coordination with insurance providers and agricultural departments.
Patil's intervention reflects growing concerns among political representatives regarding the timely delivery of government welfare benefits to the farming community in Karnataka, a state where agriculture remains a significant economic sector. The issue of delayed disbursements has periodically emerged as a point of contention between state administrators and agricultural stakeholders.
