Karnataka Power Corp to boost thermal generation as hydel, wind output dips

Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) is preparing to significantly increase thermal power generation starting next month to compensate for declining hydroelectric and wind energy output across the state.

The shift comes as the utility faces constraints in renewable energy availability. KPCL managing director Rajendra Cholan recently held discussions with officials from India's Ministry of Coal in New Delhi, focusing on securing sufficient coal supplies to support the expanded thermal generation capacity.

The transition reflects a broader challenge facing Karnataka's power sector, where seasonal variations in rainfall affect hydroelectric output while wind generation remains dependent on weather patterns. By increasing thermal capacity, KPCL aims to ensure stable power supply to consumers across the state during periods of renewable energy scarcity.

The engagement with central coal authorities indicates coordination between state and national energy agencies to facilitate the fuel supply chain required for the planned thermal power expansion. Officials are working to finalize arrangements ahead of the January implementation date.
