Karnataka pushes Centre for faster wildlife approval on Mekedatu water project

Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has written to the Centre requesting accelerated processing of wildlife clearance for the Mekedatu drinking water project, which aims to install 20 boreholes within the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary.

The project is designed to augment drinking water supplies to parts of Karnataka by tapping groundwater resources in the sanctuary area. The borewell installation requires approval from wildlife authorities before implementation can proceed.

Shivakumar's appeal underscores the state government's efforts to balance infrastructure development with environmental conservation requirements. The Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the region, falls under protected area regulations that mandate specialized clearance procedures for any developmental activity.

The request reflects mounting pressure on Karnataka's administration to address water scarcity concerns, particularly in drought-prone districts. Officials have indicated that expediting the clearance process would enable the state to commence groundwater extraction and distribution work sooner.

The Centre's environmental clearance mechanism typically involves detailed assessments of potential wildlife impact before sanctioning projects within protected areas. The outcome of the state's request remains pending with relevant central ministries.
